Scopes Trial Fun Facts

The Scopes Trial ended as many people forecast and both prosecution and defense desired…with a guilty verdict even though Scopes privately could not recollect if he had actually taught macro evolution in the class he taught as a substitute. Judge John T. Raulston set the fine at $100, and many people volunteered to pay the fine, including the ACLU, Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan. The rest of the story is that while many people volunteered to pay Scopes' fine, there is no record that the fine was ever actually paid.
